Blood bath as 10 killed on Election Day

Unprecedented tragedies almost marred the National Assembly elections in Borno yesterday as bomb blast injured about 10 persons including an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and a police woman barely seven hours after gunmen shot 10 persons dead in two separate attacks.
The bomb blast which occurred at midday at a polling unit at Angwa Doki, Maiduguri metropolis 30 minutes to the completion of accreditation of voters claimed the life of a police woman and injured nine others, including the presiding officer at the polling unit.
However, no fewer than seven critically injured victims were admitted at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for treatment. Regrettably, the blast chopped off the legs and arms of the policewomen while the two eyes of the presiding officer were blown off.
The blast, according to eyewitnesses caused pandemonium as voters, party agents, security personnel and INEC staff ran for their dear lives.
Security sources said the bomb might have been smuggled into the polling area by a bomber who probably disguised as a voter. The blast came barely seven hours after gunmen attacked a police station in Shani, south of Borno State, where election materials were being off-loaded and kept at the station. Eight persons including the PDP secretary in Shani Local Government, Alhaji Idrissa, two policemen, a personnel of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), a staff of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDSC) and four others.
Sunday Sun gathered that the security personnel were attached to the INEC vehicle that conveyed election materials from Maiduguri, the state headquarters to Shani Divisional Police Headquarters, where the materials for the Saturday polls were expected to be kept. It was gathered that the gunmen launched an offensive as soon as the materials were being offloaded and taken to the police headquarters.
“They came there on motorcycles but I can’t ascertain their number because it seems they had been around the area waiting for the vehicle and monitoring events at the police station. They just opened fire suddenly and everybody went down for cover. It was after some minutes I saw that my colleague, two policemen and a FRSC had been shot dead while the PDP man was still groaning in pains as at then,” one of the security personnel who witnessed the attack told Sunday Sun on telephone on condition of anonymity.
Also hours later, the chairman of All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in Jere Local Government, Alhaji Fannami Ngarnam was shot dead along with his son at about 1 am. The assailants were said to have forced their way into the deceased’s house at Bulabulin Garnam and shot the politician with his son.
Acting Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mai Mamman, an Assistant Superintendent of Police who spoke on behalf of the newly posted Commissioner of Police, Mike Zuokomor claimed the attackers at Shani were bandits who were short of ammunition and had to attack the police “to get weapons for their operations,” adding that the police have taken charge of the situation by deploying more personnel to the area.
He also disclosed that the police have arrested one suspect while investigations into the attack were already going on.

PDP loses in Aso Rock Villa, VP’s ward

The Peoples Democratic Party suffered a major setback in the National Assembly election on Saturday as unofficial results from Abuja showed that it lost in the Aso Rock Villa.
The result is surprising considering the fact that the Villa is currently occupied by
President Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP. The party scored 209 votes against Congress for Progressive Change’s 390 in the election to the House of Representatives. The result of the senatorial election for the Villa was not known as at press time.
The
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole and Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, face an uncertain fate on Saturday as unofficial results of the National Assembly elections showed that they had lost their wards.
The two candidates were not the only ones that suffered a major setback Vice-President Namadi Sambo’s PDP was believed to have been defeated in his ward.
At Obasanjo-Bello’s Ward 11, Unit 16 situated at African Grammar School, Ita-Eko, the Action Congress candidate, Gbenga Obadara, polled 194 votes to defeat the senator who scored 94 votes.
In Kabala Costain Ward 005, which is the VP’s ward, the CPC polled 265 votes while the PDP had 115.
The CPC also beat PDP by 277 votes to 103 votes in the House of Representatives election in Kabala Costain Ward 005.
In most of the South-West states, the
Action Congress of Nigeria candidates made impressive showings in many of the wards where results counted in the presence of voters.
PDP candidate, Toheeb Odumawo, was said to have lost to CAN’s Gbenga Kaka. Kaka, a former
deputy governor, polled 121 votes to beat Odumowo in Isoto Ward.
There was no clear signal of the two major senatorial candidates, Chief Orji Kalu and Senator Uche Chukwumerije,  leading in the poll in
Abia State.
While some reports had it that Kalu of the
Progressive Peoples Alliance was leading in many wards in Bende, Isuikwuato, Ohafia, Igbere, Mkpa, Item, all in Abia North senatorial district, others claimed that Chukwumerije was ahead.
Our correspondents learnt that in five out of the 10 wards comprising Ikeja Federal
Constituency, the ACN was leading.
According to the results announced at the collation centre, out of a total number of 3, 181 votes cast at Ward 09 (Ikeja GRA/Police Barracks), the ACN scored 1,844, while the PDP scored 844. Other parties like the CPC and the All Nigeria Peoples Party scored 255 and 15 respectively for the House of Representatives election.
In the senatorial election for the same ward, the ACN scored 1,787, while the PDP scored 800 votes. The
Labour Party and the CPC, however, had 74 and 237 votes respectively.
In Ward 04 (Airport-Onipetesi-Onilekere), there was a total number of 14, 940 registered voters, while

607 people cast their votes.

Out of this figure, the ACN had 2,101 votes, the PDP scored 871 votes, while the CPC scored 136 votes in the House of Representatives election.

The senatorial election in the ward also saw the ACN leading with 1,552 votes, the PDP with 988 votes, the ANPP with 22 votes and the Social Democratic Mega Party with eight votes.
In the senatorial election in Alausa/Oregun/Olusosun, the ACN scored 4370 votes, while the PDP had 2618 votes with the CPC, ANPP and SDMP scoring 252,107 and 20 respectively.

Massive Turnout Nationwide amid Pockets Of Violence

THE aborted April 2 National Assembly election did little to dampen the enthusiasm of Nigerians to perform their civic responsibility yesterday in the rescheduled exercise.
Indeed, against the prediction of possible voter apathy, the people turned out in large numbers in most urban and rural areas across the country. There were also reports of low attendance in some areas.
However, the dampener came in the form of violence and snatching of ballot papers and boxes in several places.
For instance, bombs were exploded in Borno State capital, Maiduguri, injuring five persons while an ANPP local chairman and his son in Jere council of the state were shot dead by unknown assailants. In the same vein, a bomb blast was, around 6.15 pm yesterday, reported from a collation centre in Maiduguri. As at press time, there was sketchy details regarding the magnitude of casualties recorded.
Also, there were reports of election officials preventing people, who did not queue to be counted after being accredited, from the actual voting. Many were thus disenfranchised.
Nonetheless, the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, described the turnout for the election as impressive. His assessment came on the heels of the poll’s eve bomb explosions in Suleja, Niger State, which killed many officials of the INEC, particularly members of the NYSC, who are serving as ad-hoc staff in the election.
Similarly, prominent Nigerians and local and international observers have hailed the election as successful.
President Jonathan, along with his wife, Dame Patience, voted at his Otuoke community in Bayelsa State.
